Dr. John Kinyuru, PhD, RNS

John Kinyuru is a Food Systems and Nutrition Specialist with 20 years of experience. He holds a PhD in Food Science and Nutrition, MSc in Food Science and Technology and a BSc in Food Science and Technology. He has been a Senior Lecturer and Research Scientist in Food Science, Technology and Nutrition at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology as well as being the Deputy Executive Director and Head of Programmes at the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD). He has a wealth of experience and knowledge in harvest and post-harvest technology, food processing, food safety, food quality assurance and quality control. He has implemented programs in the food industry in different sectors including grains and pulses, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, milk, meat and fish, root and tubers edible insects’ processing sectors. He is well versed with food processing for small business, medium and large enterprises having supported food product development initiatives across Sub-saharan Africa. He has been involved in nutritious foods product development and launch with various food companies with considerable success.

. He is also experienced in implementation of food safety management systems namely GMP, HACCP, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, EUREPGAP, BRC and ethical production. Through his consulting firm, he has offered technical support to the food industry through organisations such as GAIN, Technoserve, DCA, PFS, The World Bank, World Food Programme among others. He is a certified Food Safety Auditor with FSSC 22000 and is a member of the National Quality Institute, Kenya. John has been instrumental is food standards development in Africa as a member of the Technical Committees of Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) as well as the Africa Regional Standards Organisation (ARSO). He has also published over 100 scientific publications and books in food systems and nutrition.
